Lupus Dei

I've never come across Germany's Powerwolf before, but as soon as the album starts, you know it's going to be very tongue-in-cheek. With their Dream Evil/Iron Maiden hybrid Classic Heavy Metal anthems and a huge theatrical horror feel to it, "Lupus Dei" is a fantastically enjoyable listen.
Dressed as what only can be described as Un-Dead/Zombie Priests, they actually recorded parts of "Lupus Dei" in a chapel built in the 12th century. They even make use of a 30-piece classical choir. When listening to the album, apart from the aforementioned bands, at times they remind me of some of the stuff Lordi have been doing. Lyrically, they deal with the word of the Bible and the dogma's of metal in general. Not only is "Lupus Die" an enjoyable and at times a humorous listen with tracks such as "Saturday Satan", "In Blood We Trust" and "Mother Mary is a Bird of Pray" and there are plenty of metal "wooooooooaaaaahhhhs!", the entire album rocks big time, with no fillers whatsoever. Powerwolf are never going to change the face of heavy metal, but they do contribute a great listen in "Lupus Dei". Chris Rogers
