Live Progression
Band: Neuraxis
|
One of Canada's heaviest hitters in the realm of death metal, Neuraxis is due to release their first live album on January 8th. Other than capturing an excellent band in a live setting, this disc can serve many other purposes. One, it is the second live album of a Quebec band put out by Galy in the last few months. Near the middle part of '07, Galy released Blinded by Faith's live album and DVD, "Imperial Collapse: Live in Quebec City." BBF's performance was nothing short of phenomenal. Neuraxis, another Quebec band, presents a performance in the same town that rivals that of BBF. These performances could serve as a testament to the prowess of the Quebec, extreme metal band. "Live Progression" could also serve as a monument to their fourteen-year existence. The group recently announced their signing to Prosthetic Records, so it could additional be their last serenade on one of the truly great labels in the northwest hemisphere.
"Live Progression" may be one or all of the above, but what really matters is the music contained on the disc. Two of the most important factors in creating a solid live album are sound quality and set list. Neuraxis didn't falter in those two factors. The sound quality is thick and clear, allowing each instrument to ring loudly, without any instrument over taking the others. The set list should find acceptance to both perennial and new fans. There is at least one song from each of their full-lengths, starting with "Imagery" from 1997 and ending with their latest studio offering, "Trilateral Progression." Neuraxis is a name I've seen quite often over the last few years but never had the chance to hear their music. I wish I had explored their music at a much earlier time because this band is the real deal. Neuraxis doesn't subscribe to just one school of death metal; instead, they take a piece of most styles. Take for instance the opening track "The Apex." This track begins like the typical Florida death metal song complete with chugging guitars, ala Malevolent Creation. Soon the group transitions into melodic, Swedish-style rhythms, then back to Floridian death metal string work. "Franctionized" is pure brutality, complete with guttural vocals and head-stomping breakdowns. "Thought ADJuster" features some of the catchiest licks throughout the album. It has a war-like mentality, showing the group dig in the trenches with slow, string-bending riffs, but when the group sets the music into motion, they take a full-frontal attack. Most of the releases through Galy expose some of Canada's best extreme artists. With Neuraxis, the group was able to get their name out there and help them become one of Canada's premiere death metal groups. Because "Live Progression" highlights material throughout Neuraxis' career, and does it with such quality, fans of progressive death new to Neuraxis should pick up a copy of this album. Darren Cowan
