Lurking Fear
Band: Mekong Delta

Despite being hailed as a Cult act, I have never actually heard of Mekong Delta, never mind listening to any of their albums before.
Now, I do have to admit I like it when things get a bit technical in regards to my metal, and on paper, Mekong Delta seems like the perfect band. Technical Prog-Thrash, think along the lines of Voivod and you'll get a pretty good impression of what Mekong Delta are about. After listening to the entire album the first few times I was totally stumped; could this be the greatest thing ever or is it the biggest pile of drivel I've ever heard? I was, and still am totally undecided a fair few listens after. There are some pretty impressive and technical moments throughout "Lurking Fear", but the album is nearly 50 minutes long, and to me it sounds like it is all one huge blurry song. I haven't got a clue what's going, and to be honest, it sounds all over the place. I am no connoisseur of Prog that's for sure, but I know what I like, and I know when an album instantly grabs me and hits me round the face in regards to sheer quality, and I'm afraid "Lurking Fear" didn't even come close to that. Who knows, I may get it after a while, but at the moment I'm still left wondering what the hell is going on. This is one for hardcore Prog lovers only I'm afraid. Chris Rogers
