I find that the sub-genre melodic death metal tends to evoke a love-hate relationship with listeners. Like Marmite, you love it or you hate it. I think this is because of the fact that it is inspired by so many other styles, and while a lot of music is placed in the melodic death metal category, I view it as a classification for the unclassifiable! French ‘Melodic Death Metal’ outfit Lovecraaft are a classic example for this, their music is so different in many ways to anything else I have heard, as is the case with many bands, I wouldn’t know where to begin labelling them. Conveniently though, we can just call all of these bands Melodic Death Metal to save us the trouble of thinking of new and elaborate names to categorize each unique group that comes our way. In 2007, less than a year after they were formed, metal trio Lovecraaft released a self-titled demo, which is quite an achievement. It is even harder however, to make it sound good!

Within seconds, Lovecraaft have us wondering why the English hate the French so much. Creepy riffs and vocals that send chills down your spine also manage to create a perfect metal ambience and are constant throughout the album. There was however one particular song, the opener, ‘Greys Elegy’ which stood out for me as being the defining piece of this EP. The almost classical intro broke into a sinister chord pattern and as the vocals emerged, the signature sound of this band made itself known with brutal force, an appealing mix of Children of Bodom…and Dimmu Borgir. The later of these influences revealing itself in the chilling second track, ‘Inorganic’...and the former in the next one, ‘Sagitarius’. Both of the last tracks also provoke thought and ultimately...f*cking rock!

Overall...I found this EP a delight to listen to and it is one that will remain blaring from my stereo for weeks to come! Without a doubt a young band to look out for.
