Hellcircles - Stillness
(Independent, 2009)

Power metal newbies from Cremona, Italy create aggressive-yet-melodic arrangements on its self-released five-song demo "Stillness." Formed just a year ago, Hellcircles are a tight and cohesive unit.

The self-titled intro has an innovative/classical piano mixed with spoken word and melodic guitar leads that create a dramatic atmosphere.

Once the galloping "Let Us Unite" kicks in, I am thoroughly impressed. Singer Marco Parisi hits the high notes spectacularly, and the fast- paced double bass drumming combined with the blistering lead guitar work of Roberto Fornaroli and Fabio Pedrali, really shine.

"The Damage Done" has a rougher vocal edge, thanks to Pedrali's preceding vocal parts, but Parisi's parts conjure up similarities to Michael Kiske, added to it are awesome lead solos and great harmonies.

"Turn Back Time" has a Gamma Ray feel to it, as well as a strong chorus, prominent bass lines and evil backing vocals.

"Rise Again" starts with a Parisi high note and doesn't stop there, packed with more melodic harmonies and aggressive riffs, the quick- paced song is a great closer to a fine demo.

"Stillness" has a clear, crisp production with every instrument shining through. For an unsigned band, this is high-class power metal. Every track is a great piece of high-energy melodic aggression.

A great sign of the times to come from Hellcircles. Keep an ear out for these guys.
