Hekz - Orfeo
(Independent, 2010)

Hekz are a four piece metal band from Bedford who are currently destroying all before them with there hyperactive but extremely powerful live show. So yes I have seen these guys live and they kick ass and I will be running back out to see them when they terrorize my area again. But enough of their live prowess and onto the new EP "Orfeo".

Now if you have seen or listened to Hekz then this EP will confirm everything that you already know, that they forge fantastic trad metal tracks, have boundless energy and sound like all the early metal bands you know and love.

The first track "When Darkness falls" is great mid tempo opener with some nice early 80s Accept guitar work and actually sounds quite close to the more modern Hammerfall tracks.

Now the next track "Breakout" is the standout tune on this EP and shows the band off to their fullest, the track has a late 70s hard rock feeling with its fantastic backing vocal harmonies and Judas priest dual guitar solos. This track will be in your head for your days and will you having throwing down some air guitar moves in the streets.

"Dead of the Night" is a track that is built to show off Bassist/Singer Matt Young's brilliant voice. To me i believe he is the UK incarnation of Japanese Power Metal Legend Yama-B (Galneryus), and I am sure some people will want to strangle him for his slightly operatic delivery but I love it.

“Don’t turn back “is a ten minute metal opus in the vein of Iron Maiden’s Wasted Years and helps to show of the maturity and musical excellence of this extremely young and talented band.

Now as we all know no Heavy Metal EP would be complete without a hidden Christmas single. "Footsteps on the Roof" is a foot tapping wizard style esqupade into the 1970s heyday of the Christmas single. Now I cant see this getting a Christmas number one but it sure beats any of the Simon Cowell manufactured crap that rules the charts at that time every year.

Now overall Hekz are a band that enjoy putting together quality metal that sounds like the best bits from many great bands but they inject their energy and humor and craft something that is uniquely theirs. I implore you to see these guys live, support their cause and help bring back good time metal.
