Hazy Hamlet
Hazy Hamlet - Forging Metal
(Independent, 2009)
Well from what I can divine from the Internet Hazy Hamlet is a Brazilian four piece classic metal band with aspirations to take on the best of genre.
Im not sure they stack up with the likes of Manowar and Accept but they don’t do a bad impression of either band. As you have probably guessed their songs are all about the glory of metal and death to the infidels, The songs are not badly written and are at times very catchy but you do you feel you have heard it all before.
The band are very tight and you can tell they have been together for over 10 years and for a debut album the production is not bad and I know the band are going for an 80s sound and I am a massive fan of this type of music but in this case it defiantly needs sharpening up.
Obviously with a band like this I must talk about the guitar solos and they are clean, well played, aggressive and defiantly carry a vintage tone, almost reminds me of mid 80s anthrax solos at times.
Now I must mention the amazingly over the top vocals of Arthur Migotto. This guy is trying desperately hard and you can tell he puts his heart and sole into it but his vocals are sung in an almost operatic baritone voice that makes me think of Japanese Power metal legend Yama-B or Icelandic Eurovision metellers Terasbetoni. The problem is Yama-B and terasbetoni out class Arthur every time.
Either way if you are a fan of cheesy over the top Manowar styled metal albums (like myself) then you will enjoy this album. It is good fun it wastes an hour and makes you want to head bang. It’s not a classic by any stretch of the imagination but I will raise my goblet of metal on high and salute Hazy Hamlet for a very enjoyable debut effort and one of the strangest names in metal.
