This is a promising self titled debut E.P. from Lancaster, USA, sludge metal band Electric Horsemen. The band formed out of the ashes of Aston family reunion. The E.P. takes on influences from other sludge bands like Eyehategod, Sleep, Iron Monkey and Crowbar. The Crowbar influence mainly showing through in the singing. The vocals change between being reasonably clear and a more screeching style. However the rest of the music does not really follow the Crowbar blue print, as it has a slower pace than the aggression of Crowbar.

The band has wider influences listed such as Neil Young, Jethro Tull, Nirvana, Melvins and Dolly Parton. Although I can't say the Dolly Parton shows up in the music, but it's always nice to see a metal band aware of the wider music spectrum. The riffs keep crawling on at a steady pace. The bass is kept heavy and fuzzy throughout the whole album and the drums mainly just keep the rhythm going. It contains all the elements of a good sludge album. The album kicks in with a great opening riff on abstainer. The vocals begin quite harsh early in the song, but change to slightly clearer vocals further in. The second song, "Blood Taker" brings the pace up a bit. Lyrically the band has written about the American life. "Farms for Food" is about the countryside being destroyed by urban development. The political nature of the songs makes them an interesting listen. Their not just repackaging Christian Redemption messages as with many doom bands. The final song, "Iron Sharpens Iron" ends the album on a more melodic note; the song featuring a nice melody with some slow screeching from the singer.

Support slots for doom masters Middian will have helped give this band some attention. The band will also be playing doomed to fall festival alongside Sourvein, Loss, The gates of slumber, Zoroaster, Roanoke and Aldebaran. This should hopefully spur (no pun intended) the band on to greater things.
