Chris Caffery
Chris Caffery - House of Insanity
(AFM Records, 2009)
Known primarily for his contributions in Trans Siberian Orchestra and of course the mighty Savatage, it turns out Mr Caffery also has a solo career.
If you’ve not heard any of his solo material before, then you are not missing much. In fact, you’re missing nothing at all. First thing you’ll notice from the opening lines of “Seasons Change” is that Chris Caffery is not the greatest of singers, there are numerous cringe-worthy moments throughout the album where he is simply off key and totally out of tune.
There are a couple of songs that could have been pretty decent, that is, of course, with somebody else performing the vocal duties. “I Won’t Know” is one of them. In fact, the only song worthy of a mention is “Solitude” and that is only because there is somebody else singing. Zachary Stevens (Savatage, Circle II Circle) sounds amazing on this one.
All the songs are pretty much middle-of-the-road and lack any real excitement. With them all clocking in at 5 minutes or more, the album gets boring very quickly. On a plus note though, some of his guitar solos on here are quality. If there were to be another Chris Caffery solo album, I would advise maybe looking into a hired hand to perform vocals.
