Brutal Deluxe - Wall of Damage
(Chimerical Recordings, 2010)
Now here is a name that I haven't come across for many years. It must be close to 10 years that their widely acclaimed debut "Divine Head" was released to much success, and with major tours with the likes of Raging Speedhorn and Napalm Death they were hailed as the next big thing.
Unfortunately, due to internal struggles and numerous other problems they completely disappeared off the radar, and they now join several bands from that era hoping to recreate some of their early success. Now I don’t mind listening to a few bands that I used to listen to in my younger and less knowledgeable days, but “Wall of Damage” is a major disappointment.
Opening Track “Wall of Damage” gets the album off to a decent start, until however, they start singing. Unfortunately, this can be said for the majority of the tracks and I personally became bored not long after pressing play. There are a couple of bearable tracks on here, only because of their heavy Helmet worship. Most of the tracks are simplistic and primitive, which I haven’t got a problem with, but some of them clock in at 6 and 7 minutes which is way too long and wont hold your attention.
Brutal Deluxe are a trip down memory lane and “Wall of Damage” showcases what just what Metal Hammer and Kerrang were raving about in the early 2000’s and this is, unfortunately, where it should have stayed.
